Honey production is deeply connected to Lousã and even though the tradition is very important for locals, beekeeping here has always been a challenge. Bees go through forest fires every summer season, constant invasion of wasps and agricultural pesticides and insecticides. These problems might seem unsolvable, but luckily, beekeepers know how to deal with them.
Ana Sançana introduced us to Mel Serra da Lousã, a local company which specializes in beekeeping and honey production. Lousã has a tradition in these fields. The bees are stored and specifically marked in special yellow boxes. Each box contains one adult queen bee.The queen bees are chosen at an early age based on their health and physical characteristics. They are kept in special conditions.High quality honey combs are specially stored and used for harvesting honey and wax.Besides honey the company also produces various types of other products, for example lip balms, hand creams and other personal care products as they have special caring factors for self care.
