The wine sector is of particular importance in the economic and environmental context, both nationally and internationally. According to information released by the Vine and Wine Institute, over 726 million litres of wine were produced last year. The latest consumption records, referring to 2020, show that in Portugal, each individual over the age of 15 consumed, on average, 51.9 litres of wine. The waste and by-products arising from wine production should be integrated into the waste management process and be subject to treatment and/or recovery in order to reduce environmental impacts.
